Home She'll Be: A Tribute to Rita MacNeil Sydney Marine Terminal - Saturday, Oct 18th - Matt is honored to be included in the Tribute to Rita at this year's Celtic Colours International Festival along with Gordie Sampson, Joella Foulds, JP Cormier, Scott MacMillan, Raylene Rankin, Ryan J and the Men of the Deeps. Matt will be performing 'Valley of Strathlorne' and 'No Matter What We Say' as duets with Rita.
~ ~ Music Workshop at CBU Nov 13 Matt will perform some of his tunes and talk about where they came from, how he writes, etc. at the workshop series at our Music Room at CBU on Thursday, Nov 13th from 12 noon until 1:30 pm.
~ ~ Canada Rocks Xmas - Confederation Centre in Charlottetown PE One of the most popular shows in the history of the Charlottetown Festival will return to the main stage of the Confederation Centre of the Arts for a limited run this holiday season.Canada Rocks Christmas, a seasonal update of Canada Rocks: The Hits Musical revue, will play from Nov. 27 to Dec. 20 as part of the centre’s P.E.I Presents series. “Canada Rocks Christmas takes a return trip across the country to revisit the best music from each province and territory and discover how Christmas is celebrated across Canada,” says director Wade Lynch, who will also be one of the featured performers in the show. “We’ll have lots of music from the original show along with Christmas favourites performed by Canadians.” While the final song list is still in development, Lynch promises some of the most popular songs from both seasons of Canada Rocks will definitely return, including the music of Leonard Cohen, the Guess Who, Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray, Bryan Adams and Tom Cochrane. “There will be more than 60 songs,’’ Lynch said. “New to this show will be music from Oscar Peterson and a tribute to Dr. Music, Doug Riley,” Riley had appeared as a special guest in the show during its second season. Canada Rocks Christmas reunites six stars of Canada Rocks: The Hits Musical Revue — Matt Minglewood, Stephanie Cadman, Joey Kitson, Shawna van Omme, Julian Molnar and Wade Lynch. A four-piece band will provide the music for the show, which will also feature several dancers. The show will play Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for the duration of the run.“Canada Rocks was a turning point for the Confederation Centre of the Arts,” Lynch said. He noted that the centre received a great deal of positive feedback from audiences during the show’s two-year run and at the end of the run had many requests to bring it back again. “We were listening,” says Lynch. “This is going to be a great treat. There’s comedy, there is great music.”

Check out his website at Grant Leslie ~ ~ New Years Eve at Membertou Trade & Convention Centre in Sydney, NS Last year was such a success Minglewood Band will once again celebrate bringing in the New Year 2009 at the Membertou Center. A special treat this year will be the Sam Moon Band as the opening show. A lot of people were disappointed last year that they could not get tickets as the show sold out in October. So please do not wait until until December to purchase tickets. Tickets will go on sale this year on Friday, October 17th. Tickets are on sale at the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre box office or by calling 539-2300. Box office hours are from 10:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday.
~ ~ Canadian Forces Tours Matt in May had the privilege once again to cross the pond, on another jaunt this time of the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. Performing for the troops is one of the most rewarding gigs he has done. A heartfelt thanks to all, especially the soldiers, and feel honored to have the opportunity to perform & help bring a slice of home to them. ~ ~ Kandahar Now Available on iTunes: iTunes Minglewood Band earlier recordings, Movin, Out on a Limb, M5 and Minglewood Band will be available for digital download on iTunes in November.

Greetings Minglewood Fans. Well it has indeed been awhile since our last newsletter. Canadian Forces Tours Matt and band in December along with country artist Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Ginette Genereux, Jennifer Roland, and comedian Pete Zedlacher had the pleasure of performing for our military on another Canadian Forces Tour, this time of Goose Bay and Alert. Then Matt in March, along with George Canyon, fiddler Alexis MacIsaac, Ginette Genereux and comedian Pete Zedlacher entertained the crew of HMCS Charlottetown in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. In May he embarks on another jaunt this time of the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. Performing for the troops is one of the most rewarding gigs he has done. Matt, Grant & Moon want to say thanks to all, especially the soldiers, and feel honored to have the opportunity to perform & help bring a slice of home to them. ~ Jeff Healey's musical friends pay tribute in two celebrations Ian Gillan, Jack Bruce, Randy Bachman, Colin James, David Wilcox among 30 artists to take part in Toronto concerts Jeff Healey's contributions to the worlds of rock, blues and jazz will be celebrated in two Toronto concerts on May 3 and 4.The first concert will be held at the Sound Academy (formerly The Docks) on Saturday May 3, and will include performances from former Cream vocalist and bass player Jack Bruce, Deep Purple's Ian Gillan, Randy Bachman, Colin James, David Wilcox, Greg Godovitz, Alannah Myles, and Matt Minglewood, among many others. Jeff Healey's Jazz Wizards will open the show, while Jeff Healey's Blues Band, the four-piece group which played with Healey both at the Toronto club that carries his name and on numerous international tours, will support the wide array of guest artists. New Years Eve at Membertou Trade & Convention Centre in Syndey, NS Due to the smash success Minglewood Band will once again celebrate bringing in the New Year 2009 at the Membertou Center. A lof of people were disappointed that waiting until December to purchase tickets. Tickets went on sale in October and was quickly sold out. Tickets this year will go on sale in early October. He did it predictably enough with a soulful rendition of Rita MacNeil's well-known Workingman, which he introduced as the blues for the Cape Breton coal miner. But before that, he also brought people to their feet with a searing new song that has the makings of an equally powerful anthem for the working Canadian soldier on the ground in Kandahar.The 60-year-old Minglewood, with more than a dozen albums behind him and a load of honours to boot, introduced the new song cautiously, as a tribute he wrote as a result of his experience playing for Canadian troops in a similar big tent in Afghanistan. As he tore through the song in trademark style, tough and wild but never out of control, there were shouts of recognition from the audience. In the song there was respect and there was humour, and in the refrain there was also an undercurrent of ambivalence that acknowledged the dirt and dust and danger of the soldiers' mission: "Keep your head down, You're in Kandahar." He did not have to spell out much more in a community where hundreds of families have been directly affected by the deployment and a region that has absorbed more than a fair share of the death and injury.Yet, this was not a song for or against the Afghanistan mission. In the context of his performance, as was the case for Rita MacNeil's classic, it was a song of solidarity for the work force in a hazardous occupation where workers have little or no say over the purposes or conditions of their work. In his own way, Minglewood has, over the years, been a kind of folk performer for his far-flung generation of Maritimers and their children, who have been as likely to be found in the Canadian Forces as in the oil sands of Alberta. As in the old folk tradition, his appeal has always drawn on his ability to share identity and experience between performer and audience. For a few minutes in that tent in a parking lot behind city hall, Minglewood's performance was one of the unexpected highlights of the annual music festival in downtown Fredericton. In front of an audience that was moved to tears as well as cheers, Minglewood was keeping the tradition alive.
